Washington Street

Chairs: Vernelle Boykin, Kathy Esslinger, Lisa Fisher
Volunteers: 25

Look for us around town. We’re the ones who fill the brick planters, adorn the doors, and refresh the gardens along Washington Street. Drive a bit slower or take a stroll to enjoy the evergreens, perennials, bulbs, and annuals that flank this historic street.

Doors and More

We also adorn doors and install and maintain the planters and gardens around the Haymarket Museum and Town Hall.

Community Hall Garden Entry

A charming perennial garden flanks the Community Hall at Evergreen Fire Station 15. Members meet quarterly to plant and maintain gardens. The beautiful plantings include bulbs, perennials, annuals, and fruit and ornamental trees. We keep the planters festooned with seasonal flowers.

Haymarket Regional Food Pantry

Food Bank Chairperson: Sally Hudson Volunteers: 50

The Pantry feeds thousands of people every year, which means they always need more food to stock their shelves. We offer seasonal suggestions for food to bring to our meetings and deliver it directly to the pantry. We also collect cash donations.

Penny Pines | Saving Forests for $68

Volunteers: 50

By collecting loose change at monthly meetings, our club members contribute to a meaningful and practical conservation project.
Each donation of $68 supplements part of the cost of replanting replacement trees indigenous to a particular damaged area. Whether by fire or by other natural catastrophes, pine trees and other trees are replaced. More information about the program is available online at the National Garden Clubs.

HAYMARKET DAY

Chairperson: Susan Brown | Volunteers: 15

The purpose was to educate and entertain visitors about the vital role bees play in our lives. Our chairs encouraged guests to plant bee-friendly bulbs that would be ready when the bees arrived.

GRO PRESCHOOL

Chairperson: Alexandra Elswick

Gro is a nature-based preschool for children 3-5 years old inside James S. Long Park in Haymarket. At Gro, kindergarten children are taught in a more natural way, utilizing both indoor and outdoor classrooms, taking advantage of the park’s four miles of hiking trails, small creek, forest, and native wildlife.

Our garden club has been asked to lead a monthly program for the students at GRO, a nature-based preschool. Each month, we read a themed story and follow up with a fun garden activity.
